Jail Psychiatric Services Practicum and Intern Training Programs:
Jail Psychiatric Services, a part of Haight Ashbury Free Clinics, Inc., has been providing psychiatric treatment to the inmates at the San Francisco City and County Jail systems since 1973. JPS offers a full spectrum of mental health care including evaluation and assessment, crisis intervention, individual and group therapy, evaluations for involuntary hospitalizations, day treatment program services, a psychiatric sheltered living unit, and aftercare and discharge planning services.
It is the mission of Jail Psychiatric Services to use both professional and community standards of care to provide compassionate, high quality mental health treatment and services, and to assist mentally ill inmates in establishing linkages with community-based mental health programs to help them avoid re-offending and future incarcerations.
JPS employs a multi-disciplinary staff comprised of psychiatrists, psychologists, MFTs, LCSWs and mental health workers. It has been the experience at JPS that having a variety of staff disciplines and philosophies working together enhances the range and quality of care provided.
The formal training program at Jail Psychiatric Services began in September 1995. We have taken students from various doctoral and master’s level graduate programs around the Bay Area. Trainees and interns will work with the inmate population and be exposed to a wide range of diagnoses and levels of dysfunction.
Practicum-level Program:
Jail Psychiatric Services’ practicum program is open to doctoral students and students in MFT and MSW programs. Trainees’ responsibilities include: short and long term individual therapy with incarcerated adults, treatment planning, case management, and making referrals to in-house or community placements as indicated.
Caseloads are comprised of male and female adult clients with Axis I and/or Axis II diagnoses and a range of medical and substance abuse issues.
Trainees are expected to work 16-20 hours per week, beginning in September and ending in July. Required days and times are: Tuesday 1:30-3:30pm and Wednesday 8:30am – 3: 30pm. Students will receive 1 hour of individual supervision and 2 hours of group supervision each week.
Interns have the opportunity to co-lead groups for dually diagnosed clients and carry a caseload consisting of incarcerated adults with a wide range of symptoms and life difficulties. The opportunity for a second year internship is dependent upon the students’ school requirements. In all cases, second year internships need to be discussed and negotiated by all parties prior to approval.
